This past September, my sister & I took a backpacking trip on the Ozark Highlands Trail. We brought my dog Nike along as our guard dog, along with a can of bear spray. The trail is quite long, so we just hiked the first bit of it. Our original plan was to hike about 12 miles a day, covering 36 miles in total.
I wrote this post in December, a week before our home was opened & we accepted our first foster care placement.
We (the Kieklaks) are at the tail end of the foster care certification process. We were supposed to have our home open by November 1st, but there was some forgotten paperwork that surfaced after we signed our contract. Now, after the 1st of December, we’ve gotten all the paperwork (actually all of it this time) sent in to DHS and we’re just waiting for approval. Our foster care agency will want us to take another respite care placement before taking a (more) permanent placement.
It’s been a while since we posted regularly on here, but we wanted to tell you guys about some big changes. Both of our families started foster care this summer! We wanted to update you with where our families are in the process so you can be praying for us as we begin this journey.
Let’s start by explaining why we feel called to foster care. We’ve always had a heart for serving, and what better way to love your neighbor than to provide a safe home for a child in need? We both feel we have a safe & loving home to offer (though maybe a little crazy sometimes!) and more room in our hearts and homes, so we wanted to get involved.
For their first birthday, our boys had an airplane-themed party. I wanted to go with a theme that was very easy for cake decorating & minimal on the other decorations, but still cute. I made the boys little individual cakes so they’d each have their own little cake (we’ll see if I continue that tradition, it might be too much work once they have their own opinions and preferences).
I also made a larger cake that was for the rest of the guests, and I used a little toy seaplane for the topper. I saw someone else do something similar and I loved the idea of having a topper that is also a toy so I’m not wasting my money on something I’m only using once.
On this day last year, I was in Louisville for our embryo transfer.
It’s crazy to think that this was just a year ago, and now those tiny embryos are 4-month-olds. God is good!
