Burlap is everywhere right now, and it’s also pretty cheap. The other day, I sat down and made these placemats in about 15 minutes with a simple burlap sack from Hobby Lobby. I only used half the sack because I just made two placemats, but I could easily have made 4.
Cut 2 (or more) rectangles of burlap measuring 16 by 20 inches.
Fold the edges under twice and sew around, securing them.
Now you have nice finished edges, and the burlap won’t fray.
I kept these placemats simple so that anyone with a sewing machine can do them, but you could easily appliqué seasonal shapes on them (leaves, christmas trees, flowers, etc.), paint shapes or designs on them to dress them up, or let your kids go wild decorating them.
I’d recommend hand washing them just to be safe – happy crafting!
Check out Katie’s Thanksgiving Place Card kid’s craft, they’d go great with these!
